Enjoy all the pleasures of a rural town! Tournai offers you the combination of cultural and heritage treasures in its historic centre and the serenity of the surrounding countryside around Mont Saint-Aubert.
Start at the Tourist Office of Tournai
The start of your outing is the Tourist Office where you watch two 20-min films: ‘Le couloir du temp’, about the history of the town and ‘De la pierre au ciel’, a 3D film about the Cathedral of Our Lady, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.See the details of the movies
Walk around the historic centre (2km – 1h)
Follow the directions for a lovely walk to discover the town. Your tour takes in a multitude of monuments: the belfry (view from the top of 257 steps is definitely worth the effort!), the Grand Place, the Saint-Georges tower, the Fort Rouge, the cathedral, the banks of the Scheldt and Place Saint-Pierre, etc. If you want an audio guide, just download the audio commentary!See the full details and download the topofiche
Culinary break at the Corto Malté
On the right bank of the Scheldt is a great tapas bar with a delectable menu (we recommend the mixed tapas). You eat indoors in a trendy and cosy ‘mix and match’ deco or outdoors on the terrace, along the banks of the Scheldt with view of the cathedral.
Poets’ Walk on Mont Saint-Aubert
In the afternoon you can discover the highest point of the region just a few kilometres from the city centre. The walk through the woods will take you to the Poets’ Walk where a magnificent panoramic view awaits you. Then it’s time to relax on the terrace of the Atelier restaurant to take in the view over the Scheldt Valley, the city of Tournai, Flanders, the North of France and the Borinage (Open Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday all day. Saturday lunchtime by reservation only on +32 (0)69 22 93 51).See the full details
